Criterion Essay- Military Service

When it comes to military service, lots of students might view it as a waste of time. However, I doubt about it. In my opinion, military service not only helps students to gain working experience but also enrich their characteristic which is considered very important when they go to work or purchase a higher degree.
Military service plays an important role to mature, build and shape a sound personality. I am in favor of the point that students should go directly to their country's military instead of the workforce or college after their high school graduation. Take Taiwanese students as an example, students in Taiwan were asked to serve the army after their graduation in university. However, many high school students in Taiwan do not really know what they want to learn in university but just go with the stream instead of thinking thoroughly about their future career or development.
Giving students a year in military to carefully think about their future and interests is essential and reasonable. I support the position that a country like Germany, give their students a year in military before starting their college life. It is considered more effective compared to the Taiwan army system.
Deliberating carefully before making big decisions, students will fully appreciate and understand why they are heading the path and where they are heading to.

Criterion Essay- Extracurricular Activities

When it comes to extracurricular activities, people might consider that students should focus on academic performance rather than activities. However, I am of the opinion that the students should take these activities as an important part of their school life. First, It is of great importance that students should urge themselves to find their interests during the school life. Second, students need extracurricular activities to mature their personality, which could be purchased by the interaction between people in the activities. Third, one of the essential part of the activities is the process of brainstorming, which enable students to bridge their knowledge to a real-world situations.
To start with, students should urge themselves to find their interests during the school life. For example, I participated in a magic club in my university. Playing magic not only strengthen my confidence but also enabled me to make friends easily. I would not make all these friends and experienced the excitement of performing on the stage without magic.
Next to go would be students need extracurricular activities to mature their personality. Every students should learn something from each other, therefore, activities outside the school provide the chances for students to interact with each other. By handling all the difficult problems together, students would build their problem-solving skill and shape their open-minded characteristic.
Last but not least, one of the essential part of the activities is the process of brainstorming, which allow students to link their knowledge to a real circumstances.
According to aforementioned, I believe my viewpoints are built on solid foundation. Therefore, I support the idea of students should put effort on extracurricular activities as well.
Imagine what kind of world it would be if people only appreciate academic performance, instead of appreciating extracurricular activities. Students will mainly concentrate on how much they scored but never really open their mind to the people around them.

Hobby- Magic

I love Magic! I have learned magic for years, and have several experiences performed on the stage. The most memorable experience happened in this summer, when I performed at the talent show in Berkeley. It was my first time to perform in English in front of hundreds of students. I talked to myself before I went on stage “Go, Eric! You can do it!” Finally, I went on the stage although I was totally nervous. But it was all worthy when I heard the endless bravo and applauses after my last performance- Snow White. Wow! That is the feeling to win a Nobel Prize, I whispered. What I have learned from playing magic is to communicate with the audience. Let them understand what you were doing and you could make them followed your steps. You always have to lead the audience and the big point is to control them in your conversation. The best way to improve magic is to make up stories for your tricks. By doing so, the audiences would pay more attention to your stories rather than your magic tricks. That will ease your anxiety, and prevent audience from seeing through your tricks, since they mostly focus on hearing your stories.

Personal Background

When I was ten, my father sent me to my mother, who operates a large-scale electronics factory in Thailand. I began to absorb knowledge from my mother and study academic subjects such as English, Science, and Math...etc at Rranboode International School (RIS) in Thailand, where multicultural interactions really broadened my horizon. Not until I faced language and cultural barriers do I truly realize English is really important to me. However, that was my first time to use English as a bridge to communicate and made friends with foreigners. Most of the students came from different countries and imbued with various cultural backgrounds. Without English, I definitely would not have survived the impact. Like most Taiwanese students, I am too shy to express my feelings or ideas. Fortunately, based upon my fast-growing English skills, I became able to overcome the language barriers and cope with intercultural situations, such as discrimination (Be specific!!) and was eventually nominated as a class leader.
My mother, Joan, is not only an entrepreneur but also a great mentor of mine. She went to Thailand to seek a more challenging life, not to live in the path of ease and comfort. She was then under the stress and spur of difficulties, facing language and cultural barriers alone. She spared no effort doing her business with little capital and few resources. Her spirit was really moving, and has had a great influence on me. At night, my mother hardly closed her eyes. There were just too many problems such as …that have been bothering her, but time is like the tide that awaits no one(add some more sentence before you cite this proverb). She knew she had to move on quickly. She always told me that everyone has a chance to choose the life they want, no matter how long you live. Indeed, it’s the value of life that counts!
I discover that her enthusiastic, positive attitude was what won the clients’ confidence. My goal is to exceed my mother’s achievements, and I will undoubtedly make significant contributions to academic excellence and social activities by using language and knowledge as a springboard.
Studying abroad has always been one of my dreams! I went to Berkeley for Summer Session this year, organizing a marketing project with Berkeley students for the Postal Vault (http://postalvault.com/) company in United State. I am in charge of the “strategy” section. The job includes analyzing the company‘s current situation, and giving innovative ideas to the Creative, PR Promotion and Media Planning team. Those splendid memories filled me with international vision, and imbued me with a more positive attitude.
Right after I came back from Berkeley, I joined the entreperneurship competition which was held by TIC100. Our business model is to provide the carpool services for both car-owners and passengers, which benefit from each other. In the meanwhile they can reduce air-pollution when carpooling. I encourage myself when I face troublesome difficulties. “If not us, who? If not now, when?” If you really want to do it, do it with your heart full! Try hard and have no regret!

Self-introduction

A team leader as well as a team player, with lots of experiences performing on the stage and hosted national events. An innovative thinker as well as an exceptional executor, possessing an outgoing personality and superior communication skills. A future observer with well-rounded knowledge of digital family concepts, international issues, business management, economics, social studies, and sports. A problem solver and challenge-taker who has started up a carpool company in 2006, satisfying my desire for entrepreneural experience.

How can you demonstrate that you can handle stress well?

When I was a junior in NCNU, I had experienced such tough times, along with school projects, main majors, and many activities. At that time, I was elected as a student union leader in IBS department-my major. Meanwhile, I took twenty-five units and started up a carpool business. Perhaps, most people might feel exhausted even doing just one of them. However, I struck the balance between these three and enjoy the process of handling pressures.
Hopefully, I scored 85.9 on average, which grew almost 10 points compared to last semester. I led IBS union from good to great, learned how to work with other people in organization, and at last we achieved the highest score that never been reached before during the club evaluation. In addition, we launched a first company in NCNU, which arouse enormous discussions on entrepreneurship issue among students and teachers.
I view myself as a stress-taker mainly because my personality drives me to it. I do not like to waste time, so I use time well. I must finish all the tasks before I go to bed, so I work real hard on every subjects. I can not live a meaningless life, so I always challenge myself to learn something new. I would rather not live a life on ease, but the path full of difficulties and stresses.

What is the most remarkable experience you had in college

I had a great experience of starting up a carpool company in NCNU. In addition, participated in the process of brainstorming an innovative idea and business model. Here was how the story started. Once, five of us (team members) went home by bus. During the trip, we started to debate on which topic will be used in TIC100 Competition. After our arguments, we came out no results. We were just too tired to think of any topics. However, we started to complain of the bus which we sat on. “Why it takes so long?”, “Why the seats are so uncomfortable?”, “And please tell me why we have to watch this boring and noisy movie!” Suddenly, we stopped shouting and looked at each other. “Bingo! Let us solve these problems!” I said.
Everything works well after we decided our topic, but two major problems lied ahead. First, we need to outsource our website development since we do not have skills to develop an asp website. Second, we do not have the experience of running a real company. Fortunately, we hired four graduate students in Information Management Department who are interested in our business model. We faced lots of problems but none of them could defeat us because of our positive and reliable attitude. We opened our company on 28, May 2006 and gathered 3,000 or more viewers within a week. The process was time-consuming, but full of wonders and sweats.
